During emergency situations, OPM at times issues delay/unscheduled leave. However, some components of my agency have flextime, meaning we can arrive at any time from 6-9:30am and leave 8 hours later. When delayed opening is issued, OPM has effectively canceled flextime and it has created traffic jams getting into work and leaving work. I suggest that OPM exempt from delayed opening those who have flextime.
I know many young, bright and eager individuals who are interested in becoming public servants. However the KSA's are difficult to understand and the online process of filling out an application is way too cumbersome! Even when a person labors and gets the application in they never hear anything back. The entire process is frustrating, impersonal, lacks good manners etc etc. The result is a lot of talent is going... more »
Inside deals area real problem with Dept of Army. Several agencies use AVEU, others USAJOBs still others only accept hard copy US mail applications. make it simple if AVEU is good enoug, then all agencies use that. The Army system has so many screen out words that have been passed out to spouses that all the spouse needs to do is write a good story to make the priority list.
make every federal agency that is going to contract out or a full year prior to the end of the current contract conduct a formal A76. I bet my left kidney that most of these overt paid contractors would be US federal employees. if this is a short duration thing, they could do a TERM NTE position.
We've all heard the expression "they come for the mission but they leave because of the managers". Some call this line of sight, but it would make sense to have an interactive Career Pathing Tool on USAJobs.gov. Career Pathing Tools are a great way to allow potential candidates the opportunity to explore their future with your agency. Candidates, especially millennials, want to see what the rewards are for a commitment... more »
Need to hire more specialist that can answer questions. Line is always busy and it always seems to getting a run around. If president Obama can't create some extra jobs then the angency should outsource to China or India to save money
LRP Publications have created some outstanding products and applications such as CyberFEDS, Smart Answers for Federal Managers, Federal Personnel Guide, .etc.
All of the materials and applications from LRP are copyrighted.
Recommend OPM work with LRP Publications to remove the copyright requirements and make LRP products available to every Federal Employee and Manager.
I applied for several positions of which I had the qualifications, the experience and education including a masters degree, and I have never been nvited to an interview. Of the federal supervisors I have met socially through friends, I have found these supervisors have no formal education and the feds are using these type of people who select & hire and are less inclined to hire people who are better educated than they... more »
I was pleased to see that all you needed to do to share an idea here was to "log in" using a google or aol or some such account, now that's the ticket. Your on to something - simplicity. You need more of it, government job boards and resume registering are so convoluted and difficult. College transcripts, GPAs for degrees earned over twenty years ago. You fill out and reply pages of inane data and where does it... more »
Complete work in progress. Require one task at a time to be totally completed. sure the work may pile up, but at least something will be completed.
While many people in the federal government are planning for retirement, there is a new generation of employees that can't be forgotten. Most families today consist of two working parents. As a mother, it is hard enough to return to work leaving your child in the care of someone else, but it is even worse not being able to take care of one's own medical recovery needs post-delivery because the federal government doesn't... more »
Veterans that are getting out of the service are required to go through a separations briefing. I believe these briefs are provided on board most major bases across the United States (and possibly abroad). I had heard that OPM was tossing around some initiatives or ideas to potentially placing OPM representatives in VA facilities across the US. My thought is to attempt to insert OPM into the separations briefings conducted... more »
Current employees and retirees often need access to their records for verification and many other purposes. Because many employees are mobile and work for multiple agencies throughout their career, these records tend to be dispersed and fragmented because personel records continue contain paper. The cost of this is not only the archiving and storage of paper records, but also the cost of searching, researching, and... more »
Currently there is the ARMY Resume Builder, the Navy Chart, DLA Resume, etc etc. Why do we have so many programs for the same purpose to hire people? We have wasted too many dollars on such idiotic things. Why should each organization even have pots of money for such things. One good method should be enough. Some organizations are going crazy with 10 plus KSA's or 30 on line self assessment questions and then also... more »
In a recent survey of a government agency, over one third of those interviewed stated that they did not apply for a promotion or a new position due to the overwhelming nature of the current federal hiring processes. Also, DHS just stated in a Post article that it has thousands more contract workers than it does actual DHS employees. They said the cause of this is in large part due to the federal hiring process and... more »
