OPM Should Web-Cast All of Its Interagency Meetings

OPM should use web-casting technology to hold interagency meetings. This will save hundreds of hours of travel time and make these meetings more accessible to those outside the DC area. It will also help to encourage telework. The minimal cost to use this technology will be returned in saving time and expanding the impact of OPM.

OPM Should Use Social Networks

OPM should use existing social networks, including LinkedIn, GovLoop, and Facebook to further its mission. You could have the OPM Director host a blog, announce "hot jobs," provide best business practices, and issue polls on hot topics. This shouldn't cost OPM much, but will make them much more accessible to their customers - Federal employees.

One Computer Program for all Applications

Currently there is the ARMY Resume Builder, the Navy Chart, DLA Resume, etc etc. Why do we have so many programs for the same purpose to hire people? We have wasted too many dollars on such idiotic things. Why should each organization even have pots of money for such things. One good method should be enough. Some organizations are going crazy with 10 plus KSA's or 30 on line self assessment questions and then also... more »

Veterans Preference

Amend Title 5 to allow VA to provide 10 point Veterans Preference letters to servicemembers that are separating and will be known to have compensable service-connected disabilities. Currently, servicemembers may only receive a 5 point preference when applying for a Federal job before leaving service.

VA allows for servicemembers to file disability claims up to 6 month before leaving service. For those that are also... more »

Revise Qualification Standards

OPM should consider revising its outdated qualification standards. Currently, for most positions, agencies can require only one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Agencies must then define the specialized experience necessary to do the job, which can often be very narrow and difficult to screen for on a resume. Most applicants do not think to specifically address the specialized... more »

Hiring Veterans (Separations Process & OPM getting involved)

Veterans that are getting out of the service are required to go through a separations briefing. I believe these briefs are provided on board most major bases across the United States (and possibly abroad). I had heard that OPM was tossing around some initiatives or ideas to potentially placing OPM representatives in VA facilities across the US. My thought is to attempt to insert OPM into the separations briefings conducted... more »

Records Online

Current employees and retirees often need access to their records for verification and many other purposes. Because many employees are mobile and work for multiple agencies throughout their career, these records tend to be dispersed and fragmented because personel records continue contain paper. The cost of this is not only the archiving and storage of paper records, but also the cost of searching, researching, and... more »

OpenOPM v2.0: A Next Gen Opensource/OpenSocial Portal

A pilot project to build a next-gen OPM portal for the Federal Community Cloud. The idea is to build a suite of opensocial portals, one at each Federal Agency, based on The Open Stack that will enable communication with all opensocial partners.

Provide an Interactive Career Pathing Tool on USAJobs.gov

We've all heard the expression "they come for the mission but they leave because of the managers". Some call this line of sight, but it would make sense to have an interactive Career Pathing Tool on USAJobs.gov.

Career Pathing Tools are a great way to allow potential candidates the opportunity to explore their future with your agency. Candidates, especially millennials, want to see what the rewards are for a commitment... more »

Common Sense Telework Agreements

Standardize Telework Agreements with a common sense approach.

Government Shutdowns

Workers with the capability of teleworking should be expected work even when the government is shutdown due to weather or other natural disasters. Unless that worker is directly affected by the situation (power outage, for example) the employee should be expected to work.

Example: On a recent flight to DC, I sat next to a government... more »

Encourage use of more part time positions

I would like to retire and work part time closer to home. So, having worked for the government for over 32 years, I thought I'd take a look a options on USAJOBS. There aren't many there. I don't think managers naturally think of hiring people part time, nor do I think organizations make it particularly easy for managers to hire part time employees. Perhaps this is a cultural rather than a policies/procedures issue.... more »

Dear OPM, Citizen and fed applicants deserve better than OF 612

For goodness sake, come into the 21st century and redesign the gov't job app form to be USER FRIENDLY.
AT A MINIMUM, DO THESE THINGS:
1. Acknowledge people's busy lives & allow SAVE feature so applicants can work on it when all info is available and they have snippets of time.
2. Allow enough space for text entry in all fields. Section C Item 9, Section E, Section F, Section G are currently useless. Current set-up... more »

USAJOBS: Telework Positions and Positions with Flexible Hours

Create new formats for job postings on USAJOBS that include separate categories for Telework (y/n) and Flexible Hours (y/n). People who are looking for jobs would like to search for these, and it's not possible now. If employers have to step up and identify these types of jobs up front, telework and flex hours will be more job dependent than empolyee/boss dependent. Besides, putting them out there on USAJOBS will tell... more »
